Mineral sunscreen vs chemical sunscreen is one of the most common questions we hear, and the honest answer is that both can protect your skin very well. The real difference lies in how each type works, how it feels on your face and which skin types it tends to suit. Here we explain the science simply and help you choose an SPF you will enjoy wearing every day, whether you live in sunny Lisbon or grey Riga.

How sunscreen works: two ways to stop UV

Sunlight contains two types of ultraviolet light that matter for skin. UVB mainly causes sunburn, while UVA reaches deeper and plays a big part in visible ageing. A “broad spectrum” sunscreen covers both.

UV filters fall into two families:

  • Mineral filters (sometimes called physical or inorganic filters) are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. They sit on the surface of the skin and absorb UV light, with a small amount of scattering and reflection.
  • Chemical filters (also called organic filters) are carbon-based molecules that absorb UV light and turn it into a tiny amount of heat.

The idea that mineral filters “bounce” sunlight away like a mirror is only partly true: both types mainly absorb UV. The real differences are texture, finish and how your skin reacts.

Mineral sunscreen vs chemical: the key differences

Feature Mineral sunscreen Chemical sunscreen
UV filters Zinc oxide, titanium dioxide Organic filters, often several combined
Texture Traditionally thicker; modern formulas are much lighter Usually thin, fluid and invisible
White cast Possible, especially on deeper skin tones; tinted versions help Rarely
Works from The moment it is applied Best applied about 15 to 20 minutes before going out
Sensitive skin Often better tolerated Some filters can sting or irritate reactive skin
Around the eyes Less likely to sting Can migrate into eyes and sting

Mineral sunscreen benefits

  • Kind to sensitive skin. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are rarely linked to irritation, which makes mineral SPF a sensible starting point for reactive, redness-prone or post-procedure skin.
  • Ready straight away. There is no waiting time, which suits busy mornings and quick top-ups.
  • Comfortable around the eyes. If your eyes water whenever you wear sunscreen, a mineral formula is often the fix.

The main drawback has been the white cast, but newer textures are sheerer, and tinted formulas such as our Sunscreen SPF30 with tint blend into the skin and double as a light base.

When a chemical sunscreen might suit you

Chemical sunscreens have their fans too. They tend to be thin and transparent, disappear on all skin tones and layer neatly under make-up. If you have deeper skin and dislike a chalky finish, a chemical formula may feel more pleasant to wear. In the EU, every UV filter must be approved and is limited to a set maximum concentration, so both types sold here have been assessed for safety.

The trade-off is that some people find certain chemical filters sting, especially around the eyes. If that happens to you, try a mineral alternative.

SPF for sensitive skin: our advice

If your skin flushes easily, reacts to new products or feels tight and itchy, we usually recommend starting with a mineral SPF. Pair it with a simple routine like our sensitive skin care routine, and patch test any new sunscreen on your jaw first. If you have a skin condition such as rosacea, eczema or melasma, or you take medication that makes you sensitive to light, please see a doctor or pharmacist for personal advice on sun protection.

How to choose and use your sunscreen

The best sunscreen is the one you will wear every day. Whichever type you choose:

  1. Pick SPF30 or higher with UVA protection. In Europe, look for the UVA logo in a circle, which means the UVA protection is at least a third of the SPF value.
  2. Use enough. For the face and neck, around two finger lengths of product is a good guide. Most of us apply far too little.
  3. Make it the last step of your morning routine. Apply after your serum and moisturiser. A Vitamin C Serum underneath adds antioxidant support, and our morning skincare routine shows the full order.
  4. Reapply every two hours outdoors, and after swimming, sweating or towelling off.
  5. Do not forget the body. A generous bottle like our Mineral Sunscreen SPF30 for Face & Body makes it easy to cover arms, legs and shoulders without rationing.
  6. Keep a stick for top-ups. The Sun Protection SPF50 Stick fits in a pocket and is handy for noses, ears and the backs of hands, and for reapplying over make-up.
  7. Cleanse properly at night. Sunscreen is designed to stay put, so remove it gently with Micellar Cleansing Water or our Sensitive Skin Oil-To-Milk Cleanser.

And yes, you still need SPF in autumn and winter: UVA passes through clouds and windows all year round.

So, which is better?

Neither type is better for everyone. Mineral sunscreen is often the more comfortable choice for sensitive skin and anyone whose eyes sting with SPF. Chemical sunscreen can feel lighter and more invisible, especially on deeper skin tones. Choose broad-spectrum SPF30 or more, apply plenty and reapply often, and either will protect you well. For babies and young children, ask a doctor or pharmacist which sun protection is right.

Frequently asked questions

Is mineral sunscreen safer than chemical sunscreen?

Both are considered safe when used as directed, and in the EU all UV filters are regulated with strict limits. Mineral sunscreen is often better tolerated by sensitive skin, but it is not automatically “safer” for everyone.

Can I wear sunscreen under make-up?

Yes. Apply sunscreen as the final skincare step, let it settle for a minute or two, then apply make-up.

Does a higher SPF mean I can stay in the sun longer?

Not really. SPF50 blocks a little more UVB than SPF30, but no sunscreen blocks everything, so reapply regularly and seek shade at midday.
