Exfoliating is one of the quickest ways to make skin look brighter and feel smoother, but it is also one of the easiest steps to overdo. So how often to exfoliate face skin? For most people the honest answer is once or twice a week, then adjusted to your skin type, the product you use and the season. This guide explains why, how chemical and physical exfoliants differ, and how to tell when your skin has had enough.
Why exfoliate at all?
Your skin renews itself all the time. Old cells move to the surface and are meant to shed on their own, but that process slows down with age, dry indoor heating, cold weather and sun exposure. When dead cells build up, skin can look dull, feel rough and soak up serums and moisturisers less evenly. Make-up can sit patchily, and pores can look more noticeable.
Gentle, regular exfoliation helps clear that top layer away. The key word is gentle. Your outer skin layer is also your barrier against the cold, wind and pollution of a European winter, so the aim is to polish it, not strip it.
Chemical vs physical exfoliant: what is the difference?
Chemical exfoliants (AHAs and BHAs)
Chemical exfoliants use mild acids to loosen the bonds between dead skin cells so they lift away without scrubbing. AHA exfoliation (alpha hydroxy acids) works on the surface and suits most skin types, especially dry, dull or uneven skin. BHAs such as salicylic acid are oil-soluble, so they are often chosen for oily and blemish-prone skin.
Our AHA Peeling Concentrate is an overnight AHA treatment designed to be used once or twice a week. You apply it to clean, dry skin in the evening, follow with moisturiser and let it work while you sleep.
Physical exfoliants (scrubs)
Physical exfoliants remove dead cells by gentle friction. A good face scrub should have fine, rounded grains and a creamy base, and you should massage it in with light fingertips, never pressure. The Icelandic Volcano Face & Body Scrub is made for this kind of soft polishing on the face, and it works just as well on rough elbows and knees.
Neither type is better than the other. Many people prefer an AHA because it gives an even result with no rubbing, while others enjoy the instant smoothness of a scrub. What matters most is not doubling up: on the night you use an AHA, skip the scrub, and the other way round.
How often to exfoliate face skin, by skin type
Use this table as a starting point, then adjust to how your skin feels.
| Skin type | Suggested frequency | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | 1 to 2 times a week | AHA or a gentle scrub |
| Dry or mature | Once a week | AHA, followed by a rich cream |
| Oily or combination | 2 times a week | AHA or scrub, plus a balancing toner |
| Sensitive | Once every 1 to 2 weeks | Patch test first; go very gently |
If you have oily skin, it can be tempting to exfoliate every day to control shine. Resist it. Over-exfoliated skin often responds by feeling tight and producing even more oil. Our guide on how to minimise enlarged pores explains how to fit exfoliation into a calm, balanced pore routine.
If your skin is sensitive, our gentle routine for sensitive skin is a good place to start before adding any exfoliant at all.
Signs you are exfoliating too often
- Skin feels tight, hot or stings when you apply your usual products
- Redness or flaky patches that were not there before
- A shiny, almost “waxy” look on the cheeks or forehead
- More breakouts or irritation instead of fewer
If you notice any of these, stop exfoliating for a week or two and focus on hydration and barrier care. If redness, soreness or a rash persists, see a doctor or pharmacist.
A simple weekly exfoliation routine
- Cleanse: start with a mild cleanser such as our Cleansing Foam and pat skin dry.
- Exfoliate (1 to 2 evenings a week): apply your AHA to dry skin, or massage in a scrub for 30 seconds and rinse with lukewarm water.
- Hydrate: on exfoliation nights, keep the rest simple. A layer of Hydrating Serum with hyaluronic acid helps skin feel comfortable again.
- Moisturise: seal it in with a gentle cream such as the Sensitive Skin Moisturiser, Fragrance Free.
- Protect the next morning: freshly exfoliated skin is more sensitive to the sun, so apply SPF every day. Our Mineral Sunscreen SPF30 covers face and body.
Avoid combining exfoliation nights with other strong actives, and leave a few days between treatments so your skin can recover.
Adjusting through the seasons
In winter, cold air outside and heating indoors leave skin drier, so many people do best by dropping to once a week. In summer, when skin can feel oilier, twice a week often works well, as long as you are strict about sunscreen. Listen to your skin rather than a fixed calendar.
Frequently asked questions
Can I exfoliate my face every day?
For most people, no. Daily exfoliation tends to weaken the skin barrier over time. Once or twice a week is plenty for most skin types, and sensitive skin may need even less.
Should I exfoliate in the morning or at night?
Evening is usually best. It gives your skin the night to settle, and AHA products like our overnight peeling concentrate are designed to be left on while you sleep. Always use sunscreen the following morning.
Can I use a scrub and an AHA in the same week?
Yes, as long as you use them on different days and keep your total to one or two exfoliation sessions a week. Never use both on the same night.
