Unlabelled night cream jar, serum dropper bottle and cleansing milk on a bedside table in soft evening light

A good night skincare routine does not need ten steps or an hour in front of the mirror. While you sleep, your skin is not dealing with sun, wind, pollution or make-up, so the evening is the best time to clean it properly, replace lost moisture and apply richer textures that would feel too heavy during the day. In this guide we walk you through what to use before bed, in what order, and how to adapt it for your skin type and the colder European months.

Why a night skincare routine matters

By the end of the day your face has collected sunscreen, make-up, sebum, sweat and city grime. Leaving all of that on overnight can make skin look dull and congested by morning. An evening skincare routine has three simple jobs: remove the day, rehydrate, and support the skin barrier with nourishing care while you rest.

Your morning routine is about protection, with light layers and SPF. Your night routine is about repair and comfort. If you want to see how the two fit together, our simple 5-minute morning skincare routine is the natural partner to this one.

Step 1: Remove make-up and sunscreen

If you wear long-lasting make-up, mascara or water-resistant sunscreen, start with a dedicated remover. A two-phase formula such as our BiPhasic Make-up Remover, Fragrance Free lifts eye make-up without heavy rubbing. Shake it, soak a reusable pad, hold it on closed eyes for a few seconds, then wipe gently downwards.

No make-up today? You can skip straight to step 2.

Step 2: Cleanse gently

Next, cleanse your whole face. In the evening, a creamy cleanser is kind to skin that has spent the day in heated offices or cold air. Our Gentle Cleansing Milk can be massaged onto dry skin, then removed with lukewarm water or a soft cloth.

Very oily skin may prefer a foam or gel cleanser instead. Whichever you choose, keep the water lukewarm rather than hot, and pat dry with a clean towel.

Step 3: Tone to rehydrate

A toner is optional, but it is a pleasant way to add a first layer of hydration and prepare skin for what follows. Press a few drops of Hydrating Toner into the skin with your palms, or sweep it on with a cotton pad. Apply your next step while the skin is still slightly damp.

Step 4: Apply a treatment serum

Night is a good moment for targeted serums, because nothing will be layered on top of them except moisturiser. Choose one main serum rather than several, so your routine stays simple and your skin is less likely to become irritated.

Two or three drops are usually enough. If you want to understand why serum always comes before cream, read our guide to skincare routine order.

Step 5: Care for the eye area

The skin around the eyes is thinner and often the first place to show tiredness. Tap a rice-grain amount of Smoothing Eye Cream along the orbital bone with your ring finger. Avoid getting too close to the lash line, as products can migrate into the eyes overnight.

Step 6: Seal it in with a night cream

Night cream benefits come down to texture and comfort. Night creams are usually richer than day creams because they do not need to sit under make-up or sunscreen. They help reduce water loss while you sleep, so you wake up with softer, more comfortable skin.

Our Collagen Anti-Age Night Cream is designed for exactly this moment. Warm a pea-sized amount between your fingertips and press it into the face and neck using upward movements.

Optional: a few drops of facial oil

On very cold nights, or if your skin is dry, you can mix one or two drops of Nourishing Facial Oil into your night cream, or press it on top as a final layer. Oily and acne-prone skin can usually skip this step.

Adapting your evening skincare routine to your skin type

Skin type Keep Adjust
Dry Cleansing milk, toner, night cream Add facial oil on cold nights
Oily Toner, one serum Use a gel cleanser and a lighter moisturiser
Sensitive Gentle cleansing, fragrance-free products Introduce one new product at a time
Mature Serum, eye cream, night cream Keep the neck and décolleté in the routine

If you notice persistent redness, stinging, flaking or breakouts that do not settle, see a doctor or pharmacist before adding more products.

Small habits that make a big difference

  • Be consistent. A simple routine done every night beats an elaborate one done once a week.
  • Give products time. Wait a minute between serum and cream so each layer can settle.
  • Change your pillowcase often. Fresh cotton or silk is kinder to skin and hair.
  • Do not forget your lips and hands. Winter air dries them quickly, so a little extra care at night helps.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need a separate night cream?

Not always, but it helps. A day cream is designed to be light and to work under SPF, while a night cream is usually richer and more comforting. If your skin feels tight in the morning, a dedicated night cream is a worthwhile switch.

Can I use the same serum morning and night?

Yes, many hydrating serums work well at both times. Some people like to keep brightening products for the morning and firming or smoothing products for the evening, which keeps each routine short and focused.

How long should a night skincare routine take?

Around five minutes is plenty. Remove make-up, cleanse, tone, apply one serum, eye cream and night cream. Once it becomes a habit, it is a relaxing way to wind down before bed.
